In Oct 1972 President Monson gave a conference talk entitled 'Hands', starting by saying: “When Jesus of Nazareth taught and ministered among men, he spoke not as did the scribes and scholars of the day but rather in language understood by all. Jesus taught through parables. His teachings moved men and motivated them to a newness of life. The shepherd on the hillside, the sower in the field, the fisherman at his net all became subjects whereby the Master taught eternal truths.

Talk Benson 1988 Flooding the World with Book of Mormon Sep 2012 M3 R Davies
Some 24 years ago, in 1988 President Benson presented a classic message and vision on how we should be: Flooding the Earth with the Book of Mormon (President Ezra Taft Benson October 1988 General Conference.) My assigned topic to day is Gratitude. Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing simple pleasures, and acknowledging everything that you receive. It means learning to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you’ve been given. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. Giving thanks makes people happier and more resilient, it strengthens relationships, it improves health, and it reduces stress.
I have heard it said that “no situation is is so bad that complaining about it can't make it even worse”. Along the same vein, I suggest that “no situation is so bad or even so good that being grateful .. having an attitude of gratitude .. cannot make it better”. Summary:
A few weeks ago I woke on a sunny Saturday with nothing in particular on my to do list, so I decided to go out to 'play' in my backyard. In my backyard I have an old garage that I now use as an office. Some 70 years ago, when my mom was very young, her family (my Grandpa and Grandma Spencer) had lived in that garage during the summer while they were building the house where we currently reside. Because they had lived in it, the garage featured a functional brick chimney in the back corner. Earlier this year I had noticed a small drip developing in the roof, back in the corner by where the chimney was. When it rained, I would hear a drip, drip, drip onto the ceiling tile just above the work desk where I keep my computers, web servers, modems, routers and other electronic stuff all plugged in. I have learned that water and electronic equipment don't mix well, so I decided to fix the roof so that it would not leak.
Dream: (summary: New city, new job, out home teaching but companion not cooperating. No map or phone number. Trying to get back home .. but not sure how.)
We are actually all in this same situation. We have moved here on earth to a new life, a new home, with new careers/employment. We have to rely on others to help us. We do have our family with us, but how are we to keep them safe, and get them and us back to our true 'home' safely? D&C 59:21And in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments.
Today I would like to address some ways, wherein we can:
The Book of Helaman - Chapter 12 Men are unstable and foolish and quick to do evil—The Lord chastens his people—The nothingness of men is compared with the power of God—In the day of judgment, men will gain everlasting life or everlasting damnation. About 6 B.C.
I would like to base my thoughts today on this chapter. It is inserted into the Book of Mormon .. just a few short years before the birth of Christ and one chapter before the prophecy of Samuel the Lamanite to the wicked Nephites about 6 BC .. |
